CHAPTER 5

Sarah

Even through the thick canopy of green leaves the sun felt hot. I opened my eyes and felt the stiffness in my stomach immediately, but I knew that I couldn’t let it hold me back. The longer I kept Natasha in the jungle, the longer I was risking her life, not to mention my own.

I forced my hands into the damp earth and pushed hard against it, so that I could sit up. The fire that Natasha had built was still smoking in the center of the small opening that we’d found. I scouted the open space for Natasha, and my heart skipped a beat when I realized that she was nowhere to be seen.

Had she really run? After everything she had said about not being willing to allow others to die for her, had she really taken off in the night, when my trust had been at its peak? I tried to get to my feet, but the stiffness in my stomach wouldn’t allow for it.

“Natasha,” I called softly into the jungle that surrounded me. I knew I couldn’t shout. It would draw too much attention. I wasn’t in any fit state to be attacked by a wild animal.

A rustling in the bushes to my right caught my attention and I turned quickly. The red shirt that I’d come to associate Natasha with poked through the bushes and I instantly felt a rush of relief. Her face appeared between the branches and she looked over and me and smiled.

“I was wondering when you were going to wake up,” she said lightly, as she walked over and held out the water pouch I’d given her the day before. “I filled it up at the river,” she said as when I lifted it to my lips and drank deeply from it.

Another rustling in the bushes caught my attention and I turned again. I tried to push myself up onto my feet again, and this time, I managed with the help of the tree behind me. “Stand back,” I told Natasha, as I tried to improve my stance, so I would at least have a chance at defending the two of us.

“It’s okay,” she said gently as her hand reached out and touched my shoulder. “It’s Nathan, he found us,” she explained.

A face appeared out of the bushes and I realized it was the same guy that I’d pointed the gun at, the night that I had gone to their camp. I looked at him and then back to Natasha.

“What’s going on?” I demanded, because neither of them realized just how much trouble they were bringing on themselves for being in the jungle. “Why is here?” I demanded again when neither of them spoke.

I looked over at the one that she’d called Nathan. He looked pretty strong. He looked like he’d probably be able to account for himself in a fight if he absolutely had to. He had broad shoulders, which was always a good start, and he carried himself with a confidence that might suggest he was used to being in dangerous situations.
